A handmade single-panel noren crafted from natural ramie and plant-dyed with gallnut and Pu-erh tea.
Gallnut creates muted charcoal and gray-brown accents, while Pu-erh tea lends the fabric its warm tea-brown and softly earthen tones. Together, these botanical dyes form a quiet, natural palette with subtle variations across the individual pieces of cloth.
Each section of ramie is individually arranged and joined by hand to create an asymmetrical geometric composition. Differences in patch size, weave, color depth, and seam placement give the curtain an understated architectural quality—closer to a suspended textile artwork than a uniformly manufactured curtain.
The design draws inspiration from the spirit of Japanese boro textiles: the tradition of piecing, repairing, and preserving cloth through repeated use. Rather than reproducing an antique boro textile, this design reinterprets its visual language as a contemporary doorway curtain for modern interiors.
When illuminated by natural light, the semi-sheer ramie softly reveals its woven structure. The joined edges become darker graphic lines, creating an effect reminiscent of an architectural drawing, window grid, or abstract stained glass.
Ramie is naturally breathable and light-filtering. Its lightly rustic weave allows air and softened daylight to pass through while providing gentle visual privacy. Although lightweight, the fabric retains a crisp, naturally structured body rather than a soft or floppy drape.
