Onsen Katazome Half Noren – Natural Ramie Japanese Curtain
A short noren inspired by the stillness and familiar gestures of a Japanese bathhouse.
Part of the Moment Series, the design brings together rippling water, a bath ladle, a steaming wooden soaking tub, and a small bathing stool. The restrained, woodblock-inspired composition suggests the quiet sequence of bathing—drawing water, settling into warmth, and pausing afterward.
The motifs are formed through a traditional katazome paste-resist process, allowing the natural ramie to remain visible against the selected plant-dyed ground.
Made from Handwoven Natural Ramie No.75 Xia Bu, the curtain has a breathable, semi-sheer weave and a dry, lightly rustic surface. Its naturally structured body gives the short format a clear graphic presence without feeling rigid or heavy.
The Half Noren as a Sign
Historically, short noren marked the entrances of Japanese bathhouses, restaurants, shops, and places of hospitality. Names, crests, and familiar symbols allowed visitors to recognize the establishment before entering.
The compact format kept the doorway open and visible while functioning as a simple cloth sign. In a contemporary setting, it remains an effective form for spa entrances, service counters, small shops, and interior openings that need a soft but recognizable marker.
Suggested Uses
Place it at a bathroom entrance, home sauna, bathing area, dressing room, or linen-storage opening.
Use it as a sign at a spa, massage studio, treatment room, wellness space, or bathhouse-inspired interior.
It may also mark the entrance to a Japanese restaurant, retail shop, studio, or hospitality space.
When not used in an opening, it can be displayed as a wall banner or decorative textile sign.
Installation
The curtain is finished with three top tabs.
Thread a slim tension rod, bamboo pole, or wall-mounted rod through the tabs. Install it inside an opening for a minimal appearance or above the frame when greater visibility is preferred.
Each top tab has an approximately 1.97-inch (5 cm) opening. Rod and installation hardware are not included.
