Katazome Café Half Noren – Handmade Ramie Japanese Doorway Curtain
A short noren inspired by the quiet rhythm of making coffee.
Part of the Moment Series, the design brings together a steaming cup and a hand-pour coffee dripper in a restrained, woodblock-inspired composition. The familiar forms suggest the first warm drink of the day and the small pause that surrounds it.
The motifs are created through a traditional katazome paste-resist process, allowing the natural ramie to remain visible against the selected plant-dyed ground.
Made from Handwoven Natural Ramie No.75 Xia Bu, the curtain has a breathable, semi-sheer weave and a dry, lightly rustic surface. Its naturally structured body gives the short format a clear graphic presence without feeling rigid or heavy.
The Half Noren as a Sign
Historically, short noren served as simple textile signs at Japanese shops, restaurants, and places of hospitality. A shop name, crest, or familiar symbol could identify the establishment while the curtain marked the threshold between the street and the interior.
Unlike a full-length divider, the half noren kept the doorway visible and easy to enter. Its compact proportions made it both practical and welcoming—a form that continues to work naturally for cafés, counters, market displays, and contemporary retail spaces.
Suggested Uses
Place it at a café, bakery, tea shop, coffee counter, or restaurant entrance as a soft textile sign.
Use it above a pantry, kitchen opening, breakfast nook, home coffee station, or service counter.
It may also mark a market booth, pop-up shop, retail display, studio entrance, or small hospitality space.
When not used in an opening, it can be displayed as a wall banner or decorative textile sign.
Installation
The curtain is finished with three top tabs.
Thread a slim tension rod, bamboo pole, or wall-mounted rod through the tabs. Install it inside an opening for a clean, understated appearance or above the frame when greater visibility is preferred.
Each top tab has an approximately 1.97-inch (5 cm) opening. Rod and installation hardware are not included.

Care
Professional dry clean only. Do not machine wash, tumble dry, scrub, or use chemical detergents. Avoid bleach, alcohol, and disinfecting sprays. Remove surface dust gently and iron on a low setting. Keep away from open flame and high heat.
Handmade Character
Variations in dye depth, paste-resist edges, motif placement, weave, natural side edges, and panel alignment are inherent to handwoven No.75 ramie and the katazome process.
