Hand-Painted Beet Noren — Botanical Ramie Doorway Curtain

A hand-painted ramie noren inspired by the simple forms and colors of a kitchen garden.

The Hand-Painted Beet Noren features repeating beet motifs painted individually across two panels of handwoven natural ramie. Muted botanical green leaves sit above earthy red beet roots, creating a graphic composition that remains warm, quiet, and visibly handmade.

Unlike a printed textile, each motif is applied by hand using botanical color pastes. Variations in brush pressure, pigment density, edges, and placement remain visible, allowing the texture of the ramie and the hand of the maker to stay present in every curtain.

Two background variations are available.

Color Variations

Natural White

The beet motif is painted directly onto the undyed natural ramie ground.

Its lighter background creates the strongest contrast between the botanical green leaves, earthy red beet, and the natural texture of the handwoven cloth. When placed near a window or doorway, the open weave allows daylight to move gently through the textile.

Lotus Seedpod — Ash Gray

The ramie ground is first colored with lotus seedpod, creating a muted, naturally varied ash-gray tone before the beet motifs are applied.

The darker ground gives the same motif a quieter, more aged character, with lower contrast and a more atmospheric relationship between the painted forms and the fabric beneath them.

Because the background is botanically colored, subtle differences in depth and tone are expected from piece to piece.

Hand-Painted Botanical Color

The leaves are painted with a muted green botanical paste derived from pagoda flower, while the beet roots use a layered red pigment made with sappanwood and madder.

Each motif is painted individually rather than mechanically printed.

The pigment sits within and across the irregular surface of the handwoven ramie, so the weave remains visible through portions of the painted forms. Slight differences in color depth, brush movement, shape, and motif edges are inherent to the process.

Handwoven Ramie

Each curtain is made from No.75 handwoven natural ramie Xia Bu, with a lightly rustic texture, visible slubs, and naturally irregular weave.

The fabric is breathable and semi-sheer, allowing air and daylight to pass through while softening the view between adjoining spaces.

Although lightweight, ramie has a naturally crisp, structured body rather than a loose drape, helping the two panels maintain a clean architectural presence when hanging.

When not used as a doorway curtain, it can also be displayed as a wall textile or lightweight room divider.

Installation

For a simple, no-drill installation, place a tension rod through the top rod pocket and mount the noren inside the doorway.

For wider coverage or a stronger architectural presentation, use a bamboo, wood, or metal rod mounted above or outside the opening.

The flat straight rod pocket has an approximately 2-inch / 5 cm opening.

Rod and installation hardware are not included.

Care — Important for Hand-Painted Textiles

Professional dry clean only.

Because the motifs are individually painted with botanical color pastes, this textile should be kept dry and handled more carefully than a standard dyed curtain.

Do not allow the painted surface to come into contact with water.

Do not hand wash, machine wash, soak, spot-clean with water, rub, scrub, wring, or twist the fabric.

Do not use bleach, chemical detergent, alcohol, disinfectant spray, fabric-cleaning spray, or other liquid treatments.

For routine care, gently remove loose surface dust without rubbing the painted areas.

If ironing is necessary, use a low temperature from the reverse side only and avoid applying direct heat to the painted surface.

Keep away from open flame, high heat, rain, and prolonged moisture.

Handmade Character

Each Beet Noren is individually painted and made from handwoven ramie.

Variations in pigment density, brush movement, motif edges, weave, slubs, natural fabric edges, background tone, and panel alignment are inherent to the handmade process rather than defects.

The Lotus Seedpod / Ash Gray variation may show additional differences in background tone because of the botanical coloring process.

No two Beet Norens will be exactly alike.
