Izakaya Night Katazome Ramie Half Noren

A short noren inspired by the warmth and easy rhythm of a neighborhood izakaya after dark.

Part of the Moment Series, the design brings together grilled skewers, seafood, a beer can, a bottle, and a draft glass. Arranged across two panels in a restrained, woodblock-inspired composition, the motifs suggest warm food, cold beer, and quiet conversation at the end of the day.

The design is formed through a traditional katazome paste-resist process. Gallnut dye creates the deep indigo-charcoal ground, while the protected motifs preserve the lighter natural ramie beneath.

Made from Handwoven Natural Ramie No.75 Xia Bu, the curtain has a breathable, semi-sheer weave and a dry, lightly rustic surface. Ramie fiber is often described as approximately twice as strong as linen, giving the fabric a distinctive balance of lightness and structure. It holds a clear graphic form without feeling rigid or heavy.

The Half Noren as a Sign

Historically, short noren marked the entrances of Japanese restaurants, bars, shops, and places of hospitality. A name, crest, or familiar image helped customers recognize the establishment, while the cloth created a soft boundary between the street and the interior.

Unlike a full-length divider, the half noren left the entrance open and visible. Its compact format made it practical as both a sign and a welcoming marker—a role it continues to serve in contemporary restaurants, bars, counters, and retail spaces.

Suggested Uses

Place it at the entrance to an izakaya, sushi bar, yakitori restaurant, seafood restaurant, sake bar, or beer bar.

Use it above a restaurant counter, service window, kitchen opening, pantry, home bar, or dining-room entrance.

It may also mark a café, pop-up booth, market display, specialty shop, or hospitality space.

When not used at an opening, it can be displayed as kitchen wall decor, a window layer, or a decorative textile banner.

Installation

Each panel is finished with three top tabs, creating six tabs across the complete noren.

Thread a slim tension rod, bamboo pole, or wall-mounted rod through the tabs. Install it inside an opening for a restrained presentation or above the frame when greater visibility is preferred.

Each tab has an approximately 1.97-inch (5 cm) opening. Rod and installation hardware are not included.

Professional dry clean only. Do not machine wash, tumble dry, scrub, or use chemical detergents. Avoid bleach, alcohol, and disinfecting sprays. Remove surface dust gently and iron on a low setting. Keep away from open flame and high heat.

Handmade Character

Variations in gallnut dye depth, paste-resist edges, motif placement, weave, natural side edges, and panel alignment are inherent to the handmade process.

Fine slubs, irregular threads, and slight waviness preserve the character of the traditional narrow-loom fabric. Each Izakaya Night Half Noren is one of a kind.
