Vineyard Katazome Half Noren – Natural Ramie Japanese Curtain
A handmade half noren curtain from our Moment Series, made from handwoven natural ramie fabric and dyed with plant-based color using a traditional katazome paste-resist process.
The Moment Series is inspired by Edo-period Japanese shopfront noren culture, when fabric curtains were used at storefronts for signage, shade, dust protection, visual privacy, and as a soft marker between public and private space.
This series focuses on small everyday scenes. Through simple woodblock-print-inspired graphic motifs, each piece captures a quiet moment — a table setting, a warm drink, a bathhouse scene, a vineyard visit, or the atmosphere of a familiar space.
This piece features a vineyard-inspired motif, drawn from the quiet charm of wine country, cellar doors, harvest season, and slow afternoons shared over a glass of wine. The design includes a playful wine barrel figure and a composition of wine bottles and glasses, expressed in a simple graphic style that brings a relaxed, rustic, and story-rich feeling to the space.
This piece is created using katazome, a slow and highly detailed paste-resist dyeing technique. Before dyeing, a soybean-based resist paste is carefully applied onto the fabric over the motif areas. The pasted parts resist the plant dye, allowing the natural off-white tone of the ramie fabric to remain visible. The exposed areas of the cloth absorb the plant color, creating a clear contrast between the undyed ramie motif and the plant-dyed ground.
Unlike printing, katazome is a much slower and more hands-on process. Each step requires time, patience, and careful control — from applying the paste, drying the fabric, dyeing, rinsing, and finally removing the resist paste by hand. The result is a quiet but striking contrast between natural ramie and botanical color.
The fabric is handwoven natural ramie, with a raw, breathable texture and visible handmade character. Slight irregularities in dye depth, paste edges, weave, and surface texture are part of the natural charm of the process.
This half noren can be used as a decorative banner, small doorway accent, wine bar decor, tasting room accent, kitchen decor, dining room doorway curtain, shop textile, restaurant decor, cellar room accent, wall hanging, or a soft visual layer for an entryway or interior opening. It is especially suitable for wine shops, vineyards, tasting rooms, restaurants, home bars, kitchen spaces, and warm rustic interiors.

Gallnut (A charcoal / deep indigo tone with a calm, smoky depth.)

These natural details reflect the beauty of the handmade process and make each curtain one of a kind.
