A handmade Sakana & Sake Half Noren from our Moment Series, made from handwoven natural ramie fabric and dyed with plant-based color using a traditional katazome paste-resist process.

The Moment Series is inspired by Edo-period Japanese shopfront noren culture, when fabric curtains were used at storefronts for signage, shade, dust protection, visual privacy, and as a soft marker between public and private space.

This piece is inspired by the quiet pleasure of a simple evening table — a small dish of fish, a bottle of sake, and the calm atmosphere of sharing a drink after the day slows down. One panel features fish served on a plate, while the other shows a sake bottle and cup in a loose woodblock-print-inspired style. The design brings a relaxed Japanese dining mood to the home or retail space without feeling too formal.

It can be used as a kitchen wall decor piece, small doorway accent, bar textile, sake bar banner, Japanese restaurant sign, café curtain, pantry curtain, wall hanging, window layer, shop banner, or decorative textile for an interior opening. Its short half-noren format makes it especially suitable for smaller spaces where a full curtain would feel too heavy.

This piece is created using katazome, a slow paste-resist dyeing technique. Before dyeing, a soybean-based resist paste is carefully applied onto the fabric over the motif areas. The pasted parts resist the plant dye, allowing the natural off-white tone of the ramie fabric to remain visible. The exposed areas of the cloth absorb the plant color, creating a quiet contrast between the undyed ramie motif and the deep plant-dyed ground.

The fabric is handwoven natural ramie, also known as Xia Bu. Ramie is a strong natural fiber, often described as being about twice as strong as linen. Compared with softer fabrics, ramie gives this noren more body, structure, and durability. Its surface has a dry, breathable, slightly crisp texture, with visible fiber lines, slubs, uneven weave, and a natural plant-fiber sheen.

Because this piece is handmade, handwoven, plant-dyed, and created using a katazome paste-resist process, slight variations in color, texture, paste edges, and pattern placement are expected. Each curtain is one of a kind.

Because the ramie fabric is handwoven, the side edges may not be perfectly straight. Small uneven edges, slubs, irregular threads, slight thickness changes, uneven weave, and natural surface texture are normal characteristics of handwoven ramie fabric, not flaws.
